It’s amazing to find the inspiration masterpiece of many of my favourite dinosaur docs. The gloomy redwood forest, the ceratopsian stalked by a tyrannosaur… I’ve seen it on Planet dinosaur, but it was a group of daspletosaurus chasing down a chasmosaurus, a remarkable reference. Recently on Jurassic World dominion, a similar swampy like forest is seen, maybe Tippet’s work had na influence there as well.

These old stop motion dinosaurs videos and movies have such a long forgotten charm to them that modern movies and computer effects just simply don’t have. Now not saying Stop motion is better than CGI. Full sized animatronics will always be the best method. CGI when utilized to the fullest and pushed to what it can do is superior and allows for more photorealistic images and better movements… but the fact some one had to make these models by hand, paint them, make them fully opposable, and move them the tiniest bit at a time, frame by frame… is such a lost art of filmmaking that simply will never come back 😢

Here's an extra fun fact about this...this experimental short film was actually the catalyst of an idea that Phil Tippet would eventually share with RoboCop director Paul Verhoeven to make a dinosaur movie project...a project that after several budget disputes, rewrites, development delays, and changes in leadership would eventually become Disney's 2000 movie Dinosaur (a childhood favorite of mine).

Going old school in the 2000s they released a box set of the original trilogy it came with four DVDs the 4th was about all the behind-the-scenes stuff as well as the casting for the movie filming, the sequels the toys sound effects and the fandom. If anybody can track that down it's worth a watch it's about 4 hours.

Centrosaurus: mmm I love grass and flowers they’re excellent protein to help gain my muscular strength Centrosaurus continues in the forest searching for more vegetation to eat Centrosaurus: twigs and flowers, my favorite food and they’re delicious Centrosaurus moves on while digesting his food while being stalked by a T-rex Centrosaurus: I’m full, time to explore the forest and see what other vegetation I can find T-rex: Okay, I’m done enjoying eating my edmontosaurus meal. Time to hunt down another victim T-rex: A centrosaurus, no way! I’m going to wait until nightfall and hunt this animal down T-rex stalking in the forest while hunting the centrosaurus but steps on a branch T-rex: Where are you? Centrosaurus hears a branch snap and something’s out there Centrosaurus: Who’s there? Centrosaurus: come out who ever you are Centrosaurus moves on and notices nothing Centrosaurus: Well nobody’s home, time to move on Centrosaurus stops and hears a predator tracking him down T-rex: There you are T-rex: You’re tasty prey T-rex: come out whatever you are Centrosaurus: Who is it? Centrosaurus not moving while the predator walks silently and attacks T-rex: Surprise Centrosaurus in shock and sees the monster attacking him while screaming in pain Centrosaurus: Get away from me Centrosaurus: who are you and what do you want? T-rex: I came to hunt you Centrosaurus: Let me go T-rex: Never T-rex: There’s no escape Centrosaurus about to stab the predator with his sharp horn to stop biting Centrosaurus: That’s it, I’m going to stab you Centrosaurus stabs the predator with his horn to the t-rex screaming in pain T-rex: yeeeeeowwwww!!! T-rex: that horn is sharp, watch where you point that thing, that hurt Centrosaurus: Leave me alone T-rex: never Centrosaurus about to get eaten by the t-rex and dies T-rex: you’re tasty prey Centrosaurus: Stop T-rex about to finish the defense-less herbivore T-rex: You’re Food now Centrosaurus: nooooooooo!!!

This is awesome. Between this and David Allen's "The Primevals" finally (FINALLY!) getting a deluxe edition release it's like Christmas for fans of stop-motion. It takes me back to 1977-78 when I'd be reading about all of the projects underway that made use of this art form ("The Primevals" being one of them).

This is unironically my favorite dinosaur sequence of all time, and in my opinion one of the top 4 greatest stop motion sequences ever put to film (the other 3 being the Kong vs T.Rex fight in the original King Kong, the skeleton sequence in Jason and the Argonauts, and the Medusa sequence from Clash of the Titans).

I notice that while this sequence mostly follows the choreography of the film, there are some holdovers from the novel, notably the character's appearances in the sketches (Grant with a beard, etc.), I'm guessing this must have been before casting was completed. The T-Rex scratching its nose at the end is an obvious shout-out to both Willis O'Brien (King Kong) AND Ray Harryhausen (Valley of Gwangi).

I’d love to have Tippet remake Valley of Gwangi. An ode to Harryhausen in Phil’s manner of stop/go motion with a similar twist to the one Spielberg shoveled into the Lost World but I’d imagine executed much more imaginatively and interestingly

Phill also did a stop motion test for Jurassic Park however a top CG artist known as Spaz who worked at Industrial Light And Magic also did a CG dinosaur test and in the end Steven Spielberg made the decision to fire Phill from the project and to instead go with ILAM’s CG for the dinosaurs because of how impressed he was with the CG test even though he initially highly doubted the CG would look good enough for the movie! :)

Absolutely beautiful! It’s been years since I’ve seen this! The horned Dino’s chewing movements/motions are freaking fantastic!(tho obviously it’s not realistic for them to “chew” anything, it’s truly awesome regardless)
